Do All Roads Lead to Rome? The Potential of Different Approaches to Diagnose Aelurostrongylus abstrusus Infection in Cats

An infection with the cat lungworm, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, can be subclinical, but it also cause severe respiratory clinical signs. Larvae excretion, antibody levels, assessment findings of system and diagnostic imaging were recorded compared for six cats experimental aelurostrongylosis. In five cats, patency started 33–47 days post (pi), two excreted larvae only in long intervals low numbers. Positive ELISA results observed four patent aelurostrongylosis, starting between before 85 after onset patency. One seropositive remained copromicroscopically negative. Mild signs all examined. A computed tomographic (CT) examination lungs displayed distinct alterations, even absence evident or when excretion was The thoracic radiograph evaluation correlated CT results, more distinctive. After anthelmintic treatment 25th week infection, pulmonary improved back to normal within 6–24 weeks.
